贞观二十年（646年），李世民决定重修晋史。于贞观二十二年（648年）修成了130卷的《晋书》。唐太宗亲自为书中的《宣帝纪》、《武帝纪》和《陆机陆云传》、《王羲之传》写了论赞，所以《晋书》旧题“唐太宗文皇帝御撰”。
《晋书》有帝纪10卷、志20卷、列传70卷、载记30卷，记述西晋武帝太始元年（265年）到东晋恭帝元熙九年（420年）两朝共156年的历史。书中还追述晋的先世司马懿等自汉末以来的事迹，旁及十六国的君主和名臣，包罗的范围是很广泛的。
