注音台的誕生是為了將注音符號利用 "數字形狀分類加上筆劃結合" 的關係，讓手指的操作記憶內化，進而在輸入時達到 "意到指隨" 的境界。

為了清楚區隔出 注音台 的實驗性，將原本的指劃式注音台改稱為 "新注音台" 並免費發佈。

而一般性的需求則由另一收費的輸入法(IME)來滿足，並延續舊名而仍稱 "注音台"。
