O Livro de Provérbios é o segundo livro da terceira seção (chamada Escritos) da Bíblia Hebraica. Quando traduzido para grego e latim, o título assumiu formas diferentes: na Septuaginta grega (LXX) tornou-se Παροιμίαι Paroimiai ("Provérbios"); Na Vulgata latina o título era Proverbia, de que o nome inglês é derivado.

O livro de Provérbios tem como propósito, ensinar a alcançar a sabedoria de Deus, para aplicarmos na nossa vida cotidiana. Nos ensina a termos disciplina, uma vida prudente e a fazer o que é correto, justo e digno. Provérbios não é meramente uma antologia, mas uma "coleção de coleções" relacionada a um padrão de vida que durou mais de um milênio. É um exemplo da tradição da sabedoria bíblica, e levanta questões de valores, comportamento moral, o significado da vida humana e conduta correta. O tema repetido é que "o temor de Deus (que significa submissão à vontade de Deus) é o princípio da sabedoria". Sabedoria é elogiada por seu papel na criação; Deus a adquiriu antes de tudo, e por meio dela deu ordem ao caos; e uma vez que os seres humanos têm vida e prosperidade, conforme a ordem da criação, a sabedoria é a essência e a meta da vida religiosa.

When translated into Greek and Latin, the title has taken different forms: in the Greek Septuagint (LXX) became Παροιμίαι Paroimiai ( "Proverbs"); In the Latin Vulgate the title was Proverbia, that the English name is derived.

The book of Proverbs aims to teach to achieve the wisdom of God, to apply in our daily lives. It teaches discipline terms, a prudent life and do what is right, fair and decent. Proverbs is not merely an anthology, but a "collection of collections" related to a standard of living that lasted more than a millennium. It is an example of the biblical wisdom tradition, and raises questions of values, moral behavior, the meaning of human life and right conduct. The repeated theme is that "the fear of God (which means submission to God's will) is the beginning of wisdom." Wisdom is praised for its role in creation; God acquired above all, and through it gave order to chaos; and since human beings have life and prosperity, according to the order of creation, wisdom is the essence and the goal of religious life.
