秀才王文舉與倩女指腹為婚，王文舉不幸父母早亡，倩女之母遂有悔約的打算，借口只有王文舉得了進士之後才能成婚，想賴掉這門婚事。不料倩女卻十分忠實於愛情，就在王文舉赴京應試，與倩女柳亭相別之後，由於思念王文舉，倩女的魂魄便離了原身，追隨王文舉壹起奔赴京城。而王文舉卻不知是倩女的魂魄與他在壹起，還以為倩女本人同他壹起赴京。因此，當他狀元及第三年後，準備從京城啟程赴官，順便打道去探望嶽母，便先修書壹封告知倩女的父母，王文舉偕同倩女魂魄來到了倩女身邊，魂魄與身體又合壹，壹對恩愛夫妻得到團圓。
