Древнейший из сохранившихся памятников древнегреческой литературы, эпическая поэма, приписываемая Гомеру. Описывает события Троянской войны. В её основу, по-видимому, легли фольклорные сказания о подвигах древних героев.
Действие Илиады относится к последним месяцам десятилетней осады Трои ахейцами, описывая эпизод из истории которой охватывает незначительный промежуток времени.
Как отмечает БСЭ, считается, что «Илиада» возникла в 9—8 вв. до н. э. в греческих ионийских городах Малой Азии на основе преданий крито-микенской эпохи. Она написана гекзаметром (около 15 700 стихов), а александрийскими филологами поделена на 24 песни.
Именование «Илиада» дано по названию столицы Троянского царства Илиона.
