হাদিস (আরবিতে الحديث)(ইংরেজীতে অনেকেই বলে Hadith) হলো মূলত ইসলাম ধর্মের শেষ বাণীবাহক হযরমুহাম্মাদ সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়াসাল্লাম বাণী ও জীবনাচরণ। হাদিসের উপদেশ মুসলমানদের জীবনাচরণ ও ব্যবহারবিধির অন্যতম পথনির্দেশ।কুরআন ইসলামের মৌলিক গ্রন্থ এবং হাদিসকে অনেক সময় তার ব্যাখ্যা হিসেবেও অভিহিত করা হয়। হাদিস বিষয়ে পণ্ডিত ব্যক্তিকে মুহাদ্দিস বলা হয়।
হাদিস সংরক্ষণ করা বর্ণনা করা অত্যন্ত ফজিলতময়। কারণ এর(Hadith)মাধ্যমে প্রিয়নবী মুহাম্মাদুর রাসূলুাল্লাহ সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়াসাল্লাম এর পবিত্র কালামের হেফাজত করা হয়। আর এরকম ব্যক্তির ব্যাপারে প্রিয়নবী বলেছেন,
نضرالله امرأسمع مقالتى فوعاهاواداها كماسمع فرب حامل فقه غير فقيه ورب حامل فقه الى من هوافقه منه –
অর্থ : আল্লাহ পাক সেই ব্যক্তিকে সতেজ, ও সমুজ্জ্বল রাখুন, যে আমার কথাগুলো শুনেছে, সংরক্ষণ করেছে এবং অপরজনের নিকট তা পৌঁছে দিয়েছে। (আবু দাউদ)

এই হাদিস আমাদের নিকট তুলে ধরে হাদিস বর্ণনা করার গৌরব ও সম্মান। এজন্যে এই হাদিসের ব্যাখ্যায় কোনো কোনো মুহাদ্দিস বলেছেন, যে ব্যক্তি মূলত অর্থেই হাদিস সন্ধানী হয় তার চেহারা সজীব বা নুরানি হয়ে ফুটে ওঠবে।
শুধু ফজিলত নয়, আল্লাহর রাসূল দোআ করেছেন হাদিস বর্ণনাকারীদের জন্য এবং তাদেরকে নিজের উত্তরসূরি হিসেবে ঘোষণা দিয়ে বলেছেন।
