বিশ্বনবী হযরত মুহাম্মদ (সাঃ) যে আদর্শ দুনিয়ার মানুষের সামনে উপস্থাপিত করেছেন, এক কথায় তা-ই সুন্নাত এবং তার বিপরীত যা কিছু তা বিদয়াত এর পর্যায়ে গণ্য। নবী করীম (সাঃ) এর তেইশ বছরের অবিশ্রান্ত সাধনা ও সংগ্রামের মাধ্যমে যে সমাজ গড়ে তুলেছিলেন, তাকে তিনি মুক্ত করেছিলেন সকলপ্রকার বিদয়াত ও জাহিলিয়াতের অক্টোপাশ থেকে এবং প্রতিষ্ঠিত করেছিলেন সুন্নাতের আলোকোদ্ভাসিত মহান আদর্শের উপর। বিশ্ব মানবতার পক্ষে এ ছিল মহা সৌভাগ্যের ব্যাপার।
উত্তরকালে নানা কারণে মুসলিম সমাজ সুন্নাতের আদর্শ হতে বিচ্যূত হয়ে পড়ে, তাদের আকীদা ও আমলে প্রবেশ করে অসংখ্য বিদয়াত। এমন দিনও দেখা যায়, যখন মুসলমানরা সুন্নাত ও বিদয়াতের সংমিশ্রণে এক জগাখিচুড়ী বিধানকেই ইসলামী আদর্শ বলে মনে করতে ও অনুসরণ করতে শুরু করে। ফলে তাদের জীবনে আসে সার্বিক ভাঙন ও বিপর্যয়। বর্তমান সময় সে বিপর্যস্ত পরিবেশ ও পরিস্থিতিই গ্রাস করেছে সমগ্র বিশ্বমুসলিমকে।
