Karl Friedrich May (* 25. Februar 1842 in Ernstthal, Königreich Sachsen; † 30. März 1912 in Radebeul; eigentlich Carl Friedrich May) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller. Karl May war einer der produktivsten Autoren von Abenteuerromanen. Er ist einer der meistgelesenen Schriftsteller deutscher Sprache und laut UNESCO einer der am häufigsten übersetzten deutschen Schriftsteller. Die weltweite Auflage seiner Werke wird auf 200 Millionen geschätzt, davon 100 Millionen in Deutschland.
Bekannt wurde er vor allem durch seine sogenannten Reiseerzählungen, die vorwiegend im Orient, in den Vereinigten Staaten und im Mexiko des 19. Jahrhunderts angesiedelt sind. Besondere Berühmtheit erlangten die in drei Bänden zusammengefassten Geschichten um den Indianer Winnetou. Viele seiner Werke wurden verfilmt, für die Bühne adaptiert, zu Hörspielen verarbeitet oder als Comics umgesetzt.

Karl May war, insbesondere mit seinen Kolportageromanen, einer der erfolgreichsten Trivialliteratur-Autoren des 19. Jahrhunderts in Deutschland. Seine Abenteuerromane und Jugenderzählungen wurden in mehr als 33 Sprachen übersetzt und erreichten eine Gesamtauflage von über 200 Millionen. Sie schildern Reisen zu exotischen Schauplätzen, wie in den Wilden Westen und den vorderen Orient. Dabei wendet er sich von einem christlichen Standpunkt dem Schicksal der unterdrückten Völker zu.

In den Texten lässt sich eine Entwicklung seiner Erzählerfigur feststellen: vom namenlosen Ich, das nur Zuschauer und Berichterstatter ist (Der Gitano, 1875), über ein Zunehmen heroischer Fähigkeiten bis hin zu den völlig ausgestalteten Ich-Erzähler-Helden Old Shatterhand und Kara Ben Nemsi. Einige seiner Erzählerhelden bleiben ohne Kriegsnamen und werden nur von Freunden und Gefährten (englischer Muttersprache) „Charley“ genannt.

Karl May was one of the most prolific writers of adventure novels. He is one of the most read writers German language and according to UNESCO, one of the most translated German writer. He was known primarily for his so-called travel narratives, which are located primarily in the East, in the United States and Mexico in the 19th century.
