คาถามหาเมตตาใหญ่นี้ เป็นบทบันทึกเรื่องราวและบทพระธรรมเทศนาที่สำคัญตอนหนึ่งของพระพุทธเจ้า ซึ่งถูกจารึกไว้ในพระไตรปิฎกเล่มที่ ๓๑ หน้า ๓๔๑ ชื่อ "เมตตากถา" มีเนื้อความโดยย่อว่า สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าเสด็จประทับ ณ วัดพระเชตวันมหาวิหาร ที่อนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐีสร้างถวาย ครั้งนั้นได้ตรัสเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายให้ประชุมกันแล้วตรัสพระธรรมเทศนาโปรด พระธรรมเทศนาที่ยกขึ้นแสดงในครั้งนั้นมีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับการเจริญเมตตากรรมฐาน โดยในเบื้องต้นทรงแสดงอานิสงส์แห่งการแผ่เมตตาว่า ผู้เจริญเมตตาจะได้รับอานิสงส์มากมายถึง ๑๑ ประการ จากนั้นจึงทรงจำแนกการแผ่เมตตาออกเป็น ๓ ประเภทคือ
๑) การแผ่ไปโดยไม่เจาะจงผู้รับ
๒) การแผ่ไปโดยเจาะจงผู้รับ และ
๓) การแผ่เมตตาไปในทิศทั้ง ๑๐
จากนั้นจึงทรงแสดงคำแผ่เมตตาแต่ละประเภทโดยละเอียด และทรงเน้นย้ำให้ภิกษุจดจำนำไปปฏิบัติอย่างต่อเนื่อง ความพิเศษของคาถามหาเมตตาใหญ่นี้ก็คือ เป็นพระธรรมเทศนาที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงยกขึ้นแสดงเอง โดยไม่มีเหตุให้ต้องแสดง เช่น ไม่มีผู้คุยหรือสนทนาเกี่ยวกับการแผ่เมตตา ไม่มีผู้ทูลถาม เป็นต้น เพราะโดยส่วนมากแล้วการแสดงธรรมของพระพุทธองค์จะต้องมีเหตุการณ์ให้ต้องแสดง การที่ทรงยกขึ้นแสดงเองเช่นนี้ ย่อมเป็นพระธรรมเทศนาที่ทรงให้ความสำคัญและเป็นประโยชน์อย่างยิ่ง อนึ่ง บทแผ่เมตตานี้ เป็นบทแผ่เมตตาที่ยาวที่สุดในบรรดาบทแผ่เมตตาอื่น ๆ จึงได้ชื่อว่า มหาเมตตาใหญ่
**อานิสงส์ของการแผ่เมตตา พระพุทธเจ้าแสดงไว้ ๑๑ ประการ คือ
๑. หลับเป็นสุข : คือนอนหลับสบาย ไม่ฟุ้งซ่าน พลิกตัวไปมา
๒. ตื่นเป็นสุข : คือตื่นมาจิตใจแจ่มใส่ ปลอดโปร่ง ไม่เซื่องซึม มึนหัว
๓. ไม่ฝันร้าย : คือฝันดี ฝันเห็นแต่สิ่งที่เป็นมงคล สิ่งที่ดีงาม
๔. เป็นที่รักของมนุษย์ : คือมีมนุษยสัมพันธ์ดี จิตใจเบิกบาน ไม่โกรธง่าย มีเสน่ห์น่าเข้าใกล้
๕. เป็นที่รักของอมนุษย์ : เป็นที่รักของสัตว์เดรัจฉาน ภูตผีปีศาจ
๖. เทวดาย่อมคุ้มครองรักษา : เทวดาช่วยเหลือบันดาลให้สมหวังในสิ่งที่ต้องการ และป้องกันอันตรายที่จะเกิดขึ้นให้ถอยห่าง
๗. ไฟ ยาพิษ ศัสตรา ไม่อาจทำร้ายได้
๘. เมื่อทำสมาธิ จิตจะสงบเร็ว
๙. ใบหน้าผ่องใส
๑๐. ไม่หลงตาย : คือเมื่อถึงเวลาที่จะต้องตายก็ตายด้วยอาการสงบ มีสติ ไม่บ่นเพ้อ คร่ำครวญ ดิ้นทุรนทุราย
๑๑. ยังไม่บรรลุธรรมเบื้องสูง ก็จะบังเกิดในพรหมโลก : ธรรมเบื้องสูงในที่นี้ได้แก่ โลกุตรธรรม ๙ คือ มรรค ๔ ผล ๔ นิพพาน ๑ ผู้ที่เจริญเมตตาถ้ายังไม่บรรลุธรรม ๙ อย่างนี้ และสามารถเจริญเมตตากรรมญานนี้จนจิตเป็นสมาธิเข้าถึงฌานขั้นใดขั้นหนึ่งและเสียชีวิตลงขณะเข้าฌานก็จะไปบังเกิดในพรหมโลกทันที
