กรรมหมายถึงการกระทำ ซึ่งมีความหมายเป็นกลาง คือ มีทั้งที่ดีและที่ไม่ดี การกระทำที่ดีเป็นกรรมดี การกระทำที่ไม่ดีเป็นกรรมไม่ดี แต่ที่นำมาใช้นั้นเข้าใจว่า กรรม คือ ความไม่ดีสถานเดียว เช่น เมื่อมีอะไรร้ายๆ เกิดแก่ผู้ใดผู้หนึ่ง ก็จะกล่าวว่ากรรมของเขา คือ ความไม่ดีของเขา

“สัตว์โลกย่อมเป็นไปตามกรรม” ที่เป็นคำในพระพุทธศาสนสุภาษิต มีความหมายว่า คนและสัตว์ทั้งหลาย ที่เป็นไปต่างๆ นานา ทุกข์ก็มี สุขก็มี ดีก็มี ชั่วก็มี มิได้เกิดแต่ผู้ใดอื่น มิได้เกิดแต่อะไรอื่น มิใช่เกิดแต่เหตุใดทั้งนั้น นอกจากกรรมที่ตนได้กระทำแล้วเองเท่านั้น
ผู้ที่เป็นมนุษย์ในชาตินี้ อาจเกิดเป็นสัตว์ในชาติหน้าได้ ด้วยอำนาจแห่งกรรมของตนเอง ที่เพียงพอแก่ความเป็นสัตว์ ซึ่งมีต่างๆ ประเภท ทั้งหมู หมา กา ไก่ วัด ควาย ช้าง ม้า ที่อำนาจกรรมอาจนำให้มนุษย์ไปเกิดได้ประเภทนั้นๆ

การระวังใจจึงสำคัญยิ่งนัก การปล่อยใจให้คิดสูงส่งงดงามไปด้วยบุญกุศล ชาตินี้ก็เป็นสุขเบิกบานด้วยอำนาจของบุญกุศลที่ใจคิดถึง ละชาตินี้ไปแล้วจะได้มีชาติใหม่ที่งดงาม ควรแก่ความงดงามของความคิดที่อยู่ในจิตใจ ผู้พรั่งพร้อมด้วยสมบัติทั้งกายและทางใจที่เห็นกันอยู่ในปัจจุบัน คือ ผู้ที่เป็นไปตามอำนาจของใจในอดีต อันย่อมมีผลสืบเนื่องถึงอำนาจของใจในภพชาติใหม่ด้วย

ส่วนผู้ที่ปล่อยใจให้คิดต่ำทราบชั่วร้าย ด้วยบาปอกุศล ชาตินี้ก็เป็นทุกข์เร่าร้อนด้วยอำนาจของบาปอกุศลที่ใจคิดถึง ละไปแล้วจะได้มีชาติใหม่ที่ต่ำทรามบกพร่อง ควรแก่ความต่ำช้าของความคิดที่มีอยู่ในจิตใจ เป็นผู้ขาดแคลนทั้งรูปสมบัติ ทรัพย์สมบัติ คุณสมบัติ ที่เห็นกันอยู่ไม่น้อยในปัจจุบัน คือ ผู้เป็นไปตามอำนาจของใจในอดีต อันย่อมมีผลสืบเนื่องถึงอำนาจของใจในภพชาติใหม่ด้วย จึงพึงระวังความคิดให้อย่างยิ่ง ให้งดงามด้วยบุญกุศลไว้เสมอ จะได้ไม่ต้องมีสภาพที่ไม่เป็นที่พึงปรารถนา

ดังนั้นจึงพึงกล่าวได้ว่า
“กรรมมีจริง ผลของกรรมมีจริง”
“กรรมดีให้ผลดีจริง กรรมชั่วให้ผลชั่วจริง”
“ผู้ใดทำกรรมใดไว้ จักเป็นผู้ได้รับผลของกรรมนั้น ผู้ไม่ได้ทำหาต้องได้รับไม่”
