يعد كتاب "الفتن" للحافظ نعيم بن حماد المروزي، من الكتب المهمة التي تتحدث عن الفتن والملاحم التي تقع بين يدي الساعة التي لا يصح من ذكرها إلا أحاديث يسيرة، في الجزء الأول من الكتاب تحدث عن تسمية الفتن، وعددها، وأنواعها، وما يذكر من الخلفاء بعد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، ومعرفة الخلفاء من الملوك، وتسمية من يملك بعد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم.

وفي الجزء الثاني توقف عند تسمية الخلفاء الراشدين ومن يمللك بعدهم حتى يكون على الناس ملوك بأعمالهم. وفي أخبار عن خلفاء بني أمية، والعصمة من الفتن. وفي الجزء الثالث تناول فتنة ابن الزبير حيصة من حيصات الفتن، وفيه العلامات في انقطاع ملك بني أمية وخروج بني العباس، وانقطاع مدة بني العباس، وخروج الترك، وظهور فتنة الشام.

وفي الجزء الرابع فعقده لموضوع عقر دار الإسلام بالشام: وفيه علامة تكون من علامة البربر وأهل المغرب، وفساد البربر، وقتالهم في الشام ومصر وصفة السفياني، والرايات الثلاث، وفيه استطرد عن أخبار السفياني. وجعل الفصل الخامس: تتمة للجزء الذي سبقه، وفيه يلتقي السفياني والرايات السود يتمنى فهيا الناس المهدي ويطلبونه, ويخسف بالجيش السفياني المبعوث إلى المهدي. وظهور علامات ظهور المهدي وخروجه، واجتماع الناس وبيعتهم للمهدي بمكة، وسيرة المهدي وصفته، وما يكون بعده، وفتح القسطنطينية.
