কোরবানি সম্পর্কে আল্লাহ তায়ালা নির্দেশ হচ্ছে, ‘নিশ্চয়ই (হে নবী!) আমি আপনাকে (নিয়ামত পূর্ণ) কাওসার দান করেছি, অতএব, আপনি আপনার ‘রব’ এর সন্তুষ্টির জন্যে সালাত কায়েম করুন ও তাঁর নামে কোরবানি করুন’ (সূরা আল কাওসার-১০৮/১-২)। রাসূল (সা.) বলেছেন, ‘যে ব্যক্তি সক্ষমতা থাকা সত্ত্বেও কোরবানি করবে না সে যেন ঈদগাহের নিকটে না আসে’ (আহমদ ও ইবনে মাজাহ)। হজরত আয়েশা (রা.) থেকে বর্ণিত, তিনি বলেন, রাসূল (সা.) বলেছেন, কোরবানির দিনে মানবসন্তানের কোনো নেক আমলই আল্লাহ তায়ালার নিকট তত প্রিয় নয়, যত প্রিয় কোরবানি করা। কোরবানির পশুর শিং, পশম ও খুর কিয়ামতের দিন (মানুষের নেক আমলনামায়) এনে দেয়া হবে। কোরবানির পশুর রক্ত মাটিতে পড়ার আগেই তা আল্লাহর দরবারে পৌঁছে যায়। সুতরাং তোমরা আনন্দচিত্তে কোরবানি করো’ (তিরমিজি)।
