كتاب البدء والتأريخ هو تاريخ شامل من بدء الخلق وحتى نهاية عهد الخليفة العباسي المطيع في عام 974. الكتاب ليس أفضل الأمثلة على الدراسات التاريخية، ويتكون جزء كبير منه من قائمة بالأنبياء والملوك، وتتخلله قصص مستمدة من مصادر مكتوبة وخرافات ومن الكتب المقدسة والأفكار الشخصية للمؤلف، مثل تأملاته حول التقاليد والممارسات الدينية العديدة للبشرية. ويُعتبر النص سرداً مباشراً وسطحياً في كثير من الأحيان، باستثناء تحذير تمهيدي شديد اللهجة للقارئ بشأن أولئك الذين يفسدون عقيدة ضعاف العقول بالجدل. لم يفعل المؤلف الكثير سوى أنه أورد قائمة بموضوعات خلافية، مثل معتقدات الطوائف المتعددة للشيعة الإمامية، مع إضافة جملة أو جملتين فقط لوصف تلك المعتقدات. وقد أشار بعض الباحثين إلى وجود تحيُّز فارسي قوي في العمل، إلا أن الدراسة المتأنية لا تدعم هذا الرأي. كذلك فإن هوية المؤلف لا يمكن التأكد منها، وإن كان يُحتمل أن يكون أحمد بن سهل البلخي (توفي عام 934) أو فقيه القرن العاشر مطهر بن طاهر المقدسي. حقَّق العمل وترجمه من مخطوطة واحدة المستشرق الفرنسي غزير الإنتاج كليمان هُوار (1854-1926). لم يتمكن هوار من تحديد هوية المؤلف على وجه اليقين، حتى أنه غير رأيه في هذا الشأن عند نشر المجلد الثالث للنص العربي في عام 1903. ولا يزال السؤال عن هوية الكاتب قائماً ومطروحاً لمزيد من البحث. وقد نَشر كلاً من الطبعتين العربية والفرنسية الناشر الشهير أرنست لورو في باريس.Start and history book is a comprehensive history of the beginning of creation until the end of the reign of the Abbasid Caliph obedient in 974. The book is not the best examples of historical studies, and consists largely from the list of prophets and kings, and punctuated derived from written sources and myths and sacred books and ideas of the author's personal stories, such as his reflections about the many traditions of humanity and religious practices. The text is an account of direct and superficial often, except preliminary stern warning to the reader on those who corrupt the doctrine of the weak-minded controversy. Author did not do much except that he listed the controversial topics, such as multiple beliefs of the Shia Imami communities, with the addition of only to describe those beliefs sentence or two. Some researchers have pointed to a bias Persian forces at work, but that careful study do not support this view. Also, the identity of the author can not be ascertained, although it is likely to be Ahmed ibn Sahl al-Balkhi (d. 934) or the tenth century jurist antiseptic Bin Taher al-Maqdisi. Work achieved and the translation of the manuscript and one French Orientalist prolific Clement Hawar (1854-1926). Hawar was unable to determine the identity of the author's for sure, so he changed his mind in this regard when you publish the third volume of the Arabic text in 1903 and continues to question the identity of the writer and standing on the table for further research. Both Arabic and French editions famous publisher Ernst Loro was published in Paris.
