ولد الفرزدق عام 38 للهجرة في كاظمة (الجهراء حاليا)، وهو حفيد صعصعة بن ناجية التميمي الذي اشتهر بافتداء الإناث من الوأد، وقد سمي بالفرزدق لضخامة وتجهم وجهه. ومعنى الفرزدق، هو الرغيف وواحدته فَرَزْدَقَة، ويعد الفرزدق من شعراء الطبقة الأولى، وهو وأبوه قثراء ومن نبلاء قومه وسادتهم بنو تميم ومن أكثر الشعراء، يقال أنه لم يكن يجلس لوجبة وحده أبدا، وكان يجير من استجار بقبر أبيه، وجده صعصعة كان محيي الموؤودات وهن البنات التي كانت تدفن قبل الإسلام في الجاهلية. كان الفرزدق كثير الهجاء، إذ أنَّه اشتهر بالنقائض التي بينه وبين جرير الشاعر حيث تبادل الهجاء هو وجرير طيلة نصف قرن حتى توفي ورثاه جرير. تنقل بين الأمراء والولاة يمدحهم ثم يهجوهم ثم يمدحهم.
