ugün Türk futbolunun en eski sivil örgütü olan ve 18.000'in üzerinde üyesi ve 54 ilde şubesi bulunan derneğimizin kurulması ve gelişmesi elbette kolay olmamıştır. Bunda kurucu üyelerin çabaları kadar derneğe üye olan antrenörlerin katkıları da büyük rol oynamıştır.

Derneğin kuruluş fikrinin doğuşunu derneğin ilk başkanı, kuruculardan merhum Sahir Gürkan şöyle anlatıyor:

" 1961 yılı gününü tam hatırlamıyorum. Ankara'da Bedri Kaya ile istasyondan Ulus'a doğru yürüyoruz. Her ikimiz de o tarihlerde işimizin dışında antrenörlük yapıyoruz. Bedri Kaya bir ara " Sahir, Hüseyin Buran'la görüşsen de üçümüz bir dernek kursak" dedi. Bu fikre aklım hemen yattı. Faaliyet gösteren birçok antrenör arkadaşımız vardı. 1964 yılında Futbol Federasyonu başkanı Muhterem Özyurt'un çabaları ile ilk ciddi A lisans antrenör kursu Manisa'da açıldı. Bu kurstan önce İngiltere Futbol Federasyonu öğretim görevlilerinden Eric Jones Türkiye'ye gelerek, Kuleli Askeri Lisesi tesislerinde 30'dan fazla antrenör namzedine 10 günlük bir kurs verdi. Bu kursta yanlız gençlere dönük teknik ve biraz fizik konuları anlatıldı.

Tabi 1964 kursu farklı idi. Kursu veren Klaus Peter Kirchrath Hamburg bölge antrenörü ve ünlü Alman teknik direktörü Herberger'in asistanlarındandı.

O tarihe gelinceye kadar takımlarımızda ağabey konumunda olan eski futbolcular görev yaparlardı. Bunların bir kısmı yurt dışındaki kurslara da katılmışlardı. Yeterli lisanları olmadığından ellerinde diploma yoktu.

Kirchrath'ın 15 günlük bir kurs için Türkiye'ye gelmesi çok şeyi değiştirdi. Artık antrenörler hiç değilse günlük ve haftalık program yapmasını öğrenmişlerdi. Antrenörlüğün, sahaya çıkıp takımın başında koşmak olmadığını, bu mesleğin bir araştırma mesleği olduğunu öğrenmişlerdi.
