يعرف لغة بأنه: كلمة مشتقة من الفعل (جمع)، أي اجتماع الناس على شكل جماعة، ويعرف اصطلاحا، بأنه: مجموعة من الناس، يرتبطون معا بالعادات، والتقاليد، والأحكام الأخلاقية، ويحترمون بعضهم البعض، ويشكلون في الحي، أو القرية، أو المدينة التي يعيشون فيها جزءا من أجزاء الحياة الاجتماعية، ويعرف المجتمع أيضا بأنه: أفراد يجتمعون معا، ويعيشون في مكان معين، وتربط بينهم مجموعة من الأفكار، التي تتعلق بالعديد من مجالات الحياة السياسية، والاقتصادية، وغيرها، وأيضا من الممكن تعريف ومعنى المجتمع بأنه: جزء من الواقع الاجتماعي المرتبط بمجموعة من الأفراد، في العائلة الواحدة، أو مكان العمل، أو المؤسسة التعليمية، وغيرها، ويوجد بينهم قاسم مشترك يعتمد على المكان أي المجتمع المصغر الذي يعيشون فيه.
