শামসুর রাহমান বাংলাদেশ ও আধুনিক বাংলা সাহিত্যের অন্যতম প্রধান কবি। বিংশ শতাব্দীর দ্বিতীয়ভাগে দুই বাংলায় তাঁর শ্রেষ্ঠত্ব ও জনপ্রিয়তা প্রতিষ্ঠিত। বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামের ওপর লিখিত তাঁর দুটি কবিতা খুবই জনপ্রিয়।

জন্ম নানাবাড়িতে। বাবা মুখলেসুর রহমান চৌধুরী ও মা আমেনা বেগম। পিতার বাড়ি নরসিংদী জেলার রায়পুরায় পাড়াতলী গ্রামে। কবিরা ভাই বোন ১৩ জন। কবি ৪র্থ। পুরোনো ঢাকার পোগোজ স্কুল থেকে ম্যাট্রিকুলেশন ১৯৪৫ সালে। ১৯৪৭ সালে ঢাকা ইন্টারমিডিয়েট কলেজ থেকে আই এ পাশ করেন। ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ইংরেজি বিষয়ে ভর্তি হন এবং তিন বছর নিয়মিত ক্লাসও করেছিলেন সেখানে। শেষ পর্যন্ত আর মূল পরীক্ষা দেননি। পাসকোর্সে বিএ পাশ করে তিনি ইংরেজি সাহিত্যে এম এ (প্রিলিমিনারী) পরীক্ষায় দ্বিতীয় বিভাগে দ্বিতীয় স্থান অর্জন করলেও শেষ পর্বের পরীক্ষায় অংশগ্রহণ করেননি।

বিংশ শতকের তিরিশের দশকের পাঁচ মহান কবির পর তিনিই আধুনিক বাংলা কবিতার প্রধান পুরুষ হিসেবে প্রসিদ্ধ। কেবল বাংলাদেশের কবি আল মাহমুদ এবং পশ্চিমবঙ্গের কবি শক্তি চট্টোপাধ্যায় বিংশ শতকের শেষার্ধে তুলনীয় কাব্যপ্রতিভার স্বাক্ষর রেখেছেন বলে ধাণা করা হয়। আধুনিক কবিতার সাথে পরিচয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক-আধুনিক চেতনার উন্মেষ ঘটে ১৯৪৯-এ, এবং তার প্রথম প্রকাশিত কবিতা ১৯৪৯ মুদ্রিত হয় সাপ্তাহিক সোনার বাংলা পত্রিকায়। শামসুর রাহমান বিভিন্ন পত্রিকায় সম্পাদকীয় ও উপসম্পাদকীয় লিখতে গিয়ে নানা ছন্দনাম নিয়েছেন তিনি যেগুলো হচ্ছে: সিন্দবাদ, চক্ষুষ্মান, লিপিকার, নেপথ্যে, জনান্তিকে, মৈনাক।

কবি শামসুর রাহমান ২০০৬ সালের ১৭ই আগস্ট বৃহস্পতিবার সন্ধ্যা ৬ টা বেজে ৩৫ মিনিটে ঢাকায় বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব মেডিকেল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে চিকিৎসাধীন অবস্থায় শেষ নিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করেন। তাঁর ইচ্ছানুযায়ী ঢাকাস্থ বনানী কবরস্থানে, তাঁর মায়ের কবরে তাঁকে সমাধিস্থ করা হয়।

Shamsur Rahman was a Bangladeshi poet, columnist and journalist.
