بر اساس آیات قرآن، داستان‌های قرآنی، ساختگی و افسانه‌ای نیست؛ بلکه واقعیت‌هایی است که خردمندان از آن‌ها عبرت می‌گیرند و موجب هدایت مؤمنان می‌شود. داستان‌های قرآن بر طبق روش‌های معمولا داستان‌نویسی و رمان‌نویسی نوشته نشده است.
 سید محمد حسین طباطبایی گفته است : قرآن تنها آنچه را که در جهت هدف قرآن یعنی هدایت است، ذکر می‌کند و به بیان جزئیات رویدادها نمی‌پردازد.
بیشتر داستان‌های قرآن، درباره زندگی پیامبران است. قرآن به ویژه درباره پیامبرانی چون ابراهیم، موسی، یوسف و پیامبر اسلام(ص) به صورت مفصل سخن گفته است.
