ধান ক্ষেতে যেমন আগাছাগুলি তুলে ফেলে দেওয়া হয়, তেমনই ভগবদগীতার সূচনা থেকেই আমরা দেখতে পাচ্ছি, কুরুক্ষেত্রের রণাঙ্গনে ভগবান স্বয়ং উপস্থিত থেকে ধৃতরাষ্ট্রের পাপিষ্ঠ পুত্রদের সমূলে উৎপটিত করে যুধিষ্ঠিরের নেতৃত্বে ধর্মপরায়ণ মহাত্মাদের পুনঃ প্রতিষ্ঠা করবার আয়োজন করেছেন। গীতার কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্র হচ্ছেন কৃষ্ণ। হিন্দুশাস্ত্রীয় বিবরণ বা লোকবিশ্বাস অনুযায়ী কৃষ্ণের জন্ম হয়েছিল খ্রীষ্টপূর্ব ৩২২৮ সালে। কৃষ্ণকে যেহেতু ঈশ্বর হিসেবে বিশ্বাস করা হয় সেহেতু তাদের কাছে গীতা হচ্ছে ঈশ্বরের বাণী। অন্যদিকে আবার তারা যেহেতু ঈশ্বরকে স্বচক্ষে দেখে বিশ্বাস করে সেহেতু তারা খ্রীষ্টান, মুসলিম, ও ইহুদীদেরকে ‘অন্ধ বিশ্বাসী’ বলে সমালোচনা করে থাকে।

গীতার কিছু স্লোককে কল্পকাহিনীর মতো মনে হয়। কৃষ্ণকে এই পৃথিবীর সকলেই আমাদের মতোই একজন মানুষ হিসেবে দেখতে পাচ্ছেন। অথচ গীতাতে তার সম্পর্কে এমন কিছু কাহিনী আছে যেগুলো কোনো মানুষের পক্ষে একদমই অসম্ভব - যেগুলোকে কল্পকাহিনী ছাড়া অন্য কোনো ভাবে ব্যাখ্যা করা যাবে না। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, কুরুক্ষেত্রের যোদ্ধারা কৃষ্ণের জ্বলন্ত মুখের মধ্যে দ্রুতগতিতে ঢুকে যেয়ে ধ্বংস হচ্ছে! সম্পূর্ণ মহাবিশ্বই কৃষ্ণের মুখের মধ্যে ঢুকে যাচ্ছে! ইত্যাদি। অর্জুন আবার এই দৃশ্যগুলো দেখেছেন। একজন মানুষের মুখের ভেতর সম্পূর্ণ মহাবিশ্ব কীভাবে ঢুকে যাওয়া সম্ভব! তাছাড়া সম্পূর্ণ মহাবিশ্বই যদি কৃষ্ণের জ্বলন্ত মুখের মধ্যে ঢুকে যায় তাহলে অর্জুন সেই দৃশ্য কোথা থেকে এবং কীভাবে দেখলেন!
