সংস্কৃত রামায়ণকে পৃথিবীর আদি মহাকাব্য বলা হয়। এতে প্রাচীন ভারতের সমাজ, সংস্কৃতি, রাজনীতি, অর্থনীতি, ধর্ম, দর্শন, শিক্ষা ইত্যাদি সম্পর্কে মূলবান তথ্য সন্নিবেশিত হয়েছে। কৃত্তিবাসী রামায়ণে অনুবাদসূত্রে ওইসব বিষয় সংক্রামিত হয়েছে।

সে সঙ্গে রয়েছে মধ্যযুগীয় বাংলা তথা ভারতবর্ষ সম্পর্কে অনেক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ তথ্য। রামায়ণের প্রধান কয়েকটি চরিত্র যেমন রাম, সীতা, লক্ষ্মণ, ভরত, বিভীষণ একেকটি আদর্শের প্রতীক।

পিতৃসত্য ও প্রজা পালন, পতিপরায়ণতা, ভ্রাতৃভক্তি, ভগবদ্ভক্তি ইত্যাদি গুণের কারণে এ চরিত্রগুলি শাশ্বত রূপ লাভ করেছে। আর এ কারণেই ভারতীয় সমাজজীবনে বিশেষত হিন্দুসমাজে রামায়ণের প্রভাব চিরকালীন।

রামায়ণ হিন্দুদের নিকট ধর্মগ্রন্থের পর্যায়ভুক্ত। এটি ভারতবর্ষ এবং ভারতবর্ষের বাইরেও অনেক দেশেই প্রচলিত ও সমাদৃত। শ্রীলঙ্কা, মায়ানমার, থাইল্যান্ড ও ইন্দোনেশিয়ায় রামায়ণ এখনও খুবই জনপ্রিয়।

বাংলা ও সংস্কৃতসহ ভারতীয় বিভিন্ন ভাষা ও সাহিত্যে রামায়ণের প্রভাব অত্যন্ত গভীর। যুগে যুগে অসংখ্য কবি, সাহিত্যিক ও শিল্পী এর দ্বারা অনুপ্রাণিত হয়েছেন এবং সৃষ্টি করেছেন মূল্যবান অনেক কাব্য, নাটক, চিত্রকলা, কাহিনী ইত্যাদি।

মধুসুদন দত্ত রামায়ণের অংশ-বিশেষ অবলম্বনে তাঁর বিখ্যাত মেঘনাদ বধ কাব্য রচনা করেন। আধুনিক বাংলা সাহিত্যে উপমাদি অলংকার এবং চিত্রকল্প রচনায় রামায়ণের বহু ঘটনার ও চরিত্রের উল্লেখ আছে।
