বেদ হিন্দুদের প্রাচীনতম ও পবিত্র ধর্মগ্রন্থের নাম। এর চারটি মূল অংশ রয়েছে: ঋগ্বেদ, যজুর্বেদ, সাম বেদ এবং অথর্ব বেদ। বেদ (সংস্কৃত véda वेद " জ্ঞান ") প্রাচীন ভারতে লেখা হয়েছে। তারা সংস্কৃত সাহিত্যের পুরনোতম স্তর সংগঠিত করে হিন্দুধর্মের উপর।

এটি একটি ধর্মীয় গ্রন্থ হিন্দুদের। হিন্দু ঐতিহ্য অনুযায়ী, বেদ একটি মানবিক গ্রন্থ নয়। বৈদিক মন্ত্রগুলো হিন্দুদের অনুষ্ঠান, ধর্মীয় কাজ এবং অন্যান্য মঙ্গলজনক কাজে পড়া হয়। ‘বেদ’ শব্দের বু্ৎপত্তিগত অর্থ জ্ঞান। যার অনুশীলনে ধর্মাদি চতুর্বর্গ লাভ হয় তা-ই বেদ।

প্রচলিত বিশ্বাস অনুযায়ী বেদকে অপৌরুষেয় অর্থাৎ ঈশ্বরের বাণী বলে মনে করা হয়। এটি কতগুলি মন্ত্র ও সূক্তের সংকলন। বিশ্বামিত্র, ভরদ্বাজ প্রমুখ বৈদিক ঋষি জ্ঞানবলে ঈশ্বরের বাণীরূপ এসব মন্ত্র প্রত্যক্ষ করেন। তাই এঁদের বলা হয় মন্ত্রদ্রষ্টা।

মন্ত্রদ্রষ্টা ঋষিদের মধ্যে বেশ কয়েকজন মহিলাও ছিলেন, যেমন বিশ্ববারা, লোপামুদ্রা প্রভৃতি।
