বেদের বিধিসম্মত ভাগ চারটি (turīya)।বেদের চারটি অংশ মন্ত্র বা সংহিতা, ব্রাহ্মণ, আরণ্যক ও উপনিষদ্। মন্ত্রাংশ প্রধানত পদ্যে রচিত, কেবল যজুঃসংহিতার কিছু অংশ গদ্যে রচিত। এটাই বেদের প্রধান অংশ। এতে আছে দেবস্তুতি, প্রার্থনা ইত্যাদি। ঋক্ মন্ত্রের দ্বারা যজ্ঞে দেবতাদের আহ্বান করা হয়, যজুর্মন্ত্রের দ্বারা তাঁদের উদ্দেশে আহুতি প্রদান করা হয় এবং সামমন্ত্রের দ্বারা তাঁদের স্তুতি করা হয়। ব্রাহ্মণ মূলত বেদমন্ত্রের ব্যাখ্যা। এটি গদ্যে রচিত এবং প্রধানত কর্মাশ্রয়ী। আরণ্যক কর্ম-জ্ঞান উভয়াশ্রয়ী এবং উপনিষদ্ বা বেদান্ত সম্পূর্ণরূপে জ্ঞানাশ্রয়ী।বেদের বিষয়বস্তু সাধারণভাবে দুই ভাগে বিভক্ত কর্মকাণ্ড ও জ্ঞানকাণ্ড। কর্মকাণ্ডে আছে বিভিন্ন দেবদেবী ও যাগযজ্ঞের বর্ণনা এবং জ্ঞানকাণ্ডে আছে ব্রহ্মের কথা। কোন দেবতার যজ্ঞ কখন কিভাবে করণীয়, কোন দেবতার কাছে কি কাম্য, কোন যজ্ঞের কি ফল ইত্যাদি কর্মকাণ্ডের আলোচ্য বিষয়।

আর ব্রহ্মের স্বরূপ কি, জগতের সৃষ্টি কিভাবে, ব্রহ্মের সঙ্গে জীবের সম্পর্ক কি এসব আলোচিত হয়েছে জ্ঞানকাণ্ডে। জ্ঞানকাণ্ডই বেদের সারাংশ। এখানে বলা হয়েছে যে, ব্রহ্ম বা ঈশ্বর এক, তিনি সর্বত্র বিরাজমান, তাঁরই বিভিন্ন শক্তির প্রকাশ বিভিন্ন দেবতা। জ্ঞানকাণ্ডের এই তত্ত্বের ওপর ভিত্তি করেই পরবর্তীকালে ভারতীয় দর্শনচিন্তার চরম রূপ উপনিষদের বিকাশ ঘটেছে।

এসব ছাড়া বেদে অনেক সামাজিক বিধিবিধান, রাজনীতি, অর্থনীতি, শিক্ষা, শিল্প, কৃষি, চিকিৎসা ইত্যাদির কথাও আছে। এমনকি সাধারণ মানুষের দৈনন্দিন জীবনের কথাও আছে। বেদের এই সামাজিক বিধান অনুযায়ী সনাতন হিন্দু সমাজ ও হিন্দুধর্ম রূপ লাভ করেছে।

হিন্দুদের বিবাহ, অন্তেষ্টিক্রিয়া ইত্যাদি ক্ষেত্রে এখনও বৈদিক রীতিনীতি যথাসম্ভব অনুসরণ করা হয়।ঋগ্বেদ থেকে তৎকালীন নারীশিক্ষা তথা সমাজের একটি পরিপূর্ণ চিত্র পাওয়া যায়। অথর্ববেদ থেকে পাওয়া যায় তৎকালীন চিকিৎসাবিদ্যার একটি বিস্তারিত বিবরণ।

এসব কারণে বেদকে শুধু ধর্মগ্রন্থ হিসেবেই নয়, প্রাচীন ভারতের রাজনীতি, অর্থনীতি, সমাজ, সাহিত্য ও ইতিহাসের একটি দলিল হিসেবেও গণ্য করা হয়।
