Fjällkalendern - a part of Naturens kalender
When you visit Abisko you can participate in research on effects of climate change. Find the “fenologislinga” (the science trail) along the mountain Nuolja/Njullà, make observations of nature’s calendar and submit them using this app. See further instructions at the bottom of this page.
Fjällkalendern is part of a nation-wide citizen science network called Naturens kalender, where we collect this kind of data from all over Sweden. In fact, similar citizen science networks exist in many countries, so if you find this interesting you are welcome to continue back home.
The growing season is changing
That the growing season is changing as an effect of climate change, is not surprising at all. Plants and many other organisms use temperature cues to understand when seasons are changing, so when the climate warms up the growing season changes. Still, a changing nature's calendar is probably the most apparent sign of how climate change affects nature. Fjällkalendern was started to increase our knowledge about these effects in the Arctic and the Swedish mountains. There are of course already other international research projects in the Arctic and thus Fjällkalendern will contribute to both local, national and international research and environmental assessment.
Partners
Fjällkalendern is a collaboration between Umeå universitet, Abisko Scientific Research Station and the Swedish Polar Research Secretariatet, Abisko naturum and the County board in Norrbotten, and Naturens kalender and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).
