تختلف الطرق التي يتبعها مشايخ الطرق في تربية طلابهم ومريديهم باختلاف مشاربهم وأذواقهم الروحية، وباختلاف البيئة الاجتماعية التي يظهرون فيها. فقد يسلك بعض المشايخ طريق الشدة في تربية المريدين فيأخذونهم بالمجاهدات العنيفة ومنها كثرة الصيام والسهر وكثرة الخلوة والاعتزال عن الناس وكثرة الذكر والفكر. وقد يسلك بعض المشايخ طريقة اللين في تربية المريدين فيأمرونهم بممارسة شيء من الصيام وقيام مقدار من الليل وكثرة الذكر، ولكن لا يلزمونهم بالخلوة والابتعاد عن الناس إلا قليلاً. ومن المشايخ من يتخذ طريقة وسطى بين الشدة واللين في تربية المريدين. وكل هذه الأساليب لا تخرج عن كتاب الله وسنة رسوله، كما يقولون، بل هي من باب الاجتهاد. ولذلك يقولون: لله طرائق بعدد أنفاس الخلائق.
