تضم قائمة جامعات مصر ثلاث أنواع أساسية من الجامعات: الأولى هي الجامعات الحكومية؛ وهي المدعومة مالياً من الحكومة المصرية، ثم الجامعات الأهلية؛ وهي التي لا تهدف للربح، وثالثهما الجامعات الخاصة؛ وهي الجامعات المملوكة للقطاع الخاص. كذلك توجد الأكاديميات الحكومية والخاصة المتخصصة في مجلات معينة، والكليات العسكرية التي تديرها وتُشرف عليها وزارة الدفاع من أجل أن يلتحق طلابها بعد تخرجهم بالقوات المسلحة المصرية.
بلغ عدد الجامعات في مصر 27 جامعة حكومية و4 جامعات أهلية و20 جامعة خاصة و12 أكاديمية. بإجمالي 63 جامعة وأكاديمية تعمل داخل مصر. إلى جانب 8 كليات عسكرية تتبع وزارة الدفاع، وأيضاً ثلاث جامعات مصرية خارج البلاد، و5 فروع لجامعات مصرية خارج البلاد.The list of three basic types of universities, universities of Egypt: the first is public universities; it is financially supported by the Egyptian government, and private universities; a not-for-profit, private universities and the third was; they are privately owned universities.
