《尉繚子》是《武經七書》之一。北宋朝廷爲軍事教學和訓練的需要，精選了《孫子兵法》、《吳子兵法》、《六韜》、《司馬法》、《三略》、《尉繚子》、《李衛公問對》七部著名兵書彙編而成《武經七書》，是中國古代第一部軍事教科書。
《尉繚子》，其成書年代和作者均有爭議。一說作者是魏惠王時的隱士，一說是秦始皇時的大梁人尉繚，一般認為成書於戰國時代。《尉繚子》的軍事思想具有戰國時代的特色，思想中糅合了儒、法、道各家觀點。它反對軍事上的迷信觀念，強調政治、經濟對軍事的決定性作用，對政治、經濟和軍事關係的認識是相當深刻的。在戰略、戰術上，它主張不打無把握之仗，反對消極防禦，主張爭取主動，明察敵情，集中兵力，出敵不意，出奇制勝。
