HISTORIA:
La festividad del día de la madre procede de la antigüedad clásica, y este es sin duda uno de los motivos por los cuales se ha mantenido en el tiempo y se extiende a tantos países del mundo.

En época de griegos y romanos, esta festividad rendía homenaje a diferentes diosas maternales como es el caso de Rea, la diosa madre de los principales dioses de la mitología, como Zeus o Poseidón.

Con la caída del Imperio Romano el cristianismo asumió muchas de las festividades que ya se realizaban entonces por parte de estas culturas paganas, dando pie al mantenimiento de la festividad hasta nuestros días.

La Iglesia Católica, por su parte, tendió a relacionar la festividad del día de la madre con el 8 de Diciembre o festividad de la Inmaculada Concepción, lo que produjo que en muchos países como España, el día de la madre se celebrase hasta época reciente el día de la Inmaculada.
