خلاصه ي از داستان رمان:
شخصيت اصلي داستان، « جودي آبوت » دختر سرزنده و باهوشي است که در يک پرورشگاه بزرگ مي شود اما با پشتيباني مالي حامي ناشناس خود مي تواند به مدرسه خصوصي راه يابد. جودي که حامي خود را نمي شناسد و فقط در يک نگاه از پشت سر ديده است، او را « بابا لنگ دراز » مي نامد و اغلب درباره زندگي و فعاليتهايش به او نامه مي نويسد…



صفحه ي اول رمان:

چهارشنبه ي اول هرماه روز واقعا مزخرفي بود که همه با ترس و لرز منتظرش بودند با شجاعت تحملش ميکردند و بعد فوري فراموشش ميکردند.
در اين روز کف زمين همه جاي ساختمان بايد برق مي افتاد،ميزو صندلي ها خوب گردگيري و رختخواب ها صاف و صوف ميشد.ضمن اينکه نودو هفت بچه ي يتيم کوچولو که توي هم لول ميخوردند بايد حسابي ترو تميز ميشدند،سرشان شانه ميشد،لباس چيت پيچازي نو و آهارخورده به تنشان ميرفت و دکمه هاشان انداخته ميشد و به همه ي آنها تذکر داده ميشد که مودب باشند و هروقت يکي از اعضاي هيئت امنا با آنها صحبت کرد بگويند:(بله آقا)(خير آقا).اما از آنجا که جروشا ابوت بيچاره از همه ي بچه هاي يتيم بزرگتر بود بيشتر زحمت ها به گردن او مي افتاد.اين چهارشنبه هم مثل همه چهارشنبه هاي ماه هاي قبل بالاخره هرجوري بود تمام شد و جروشا که در انبار غذايي براي مهمان هاي پرورشگاه ساندويچ درست کرده بود به طبقه ي بالا رفتتا کارهاي هميشگي اش را انجام بدهد.در اتاق(ف)يازده بچه ي ?تا? ساله بودند که اواز آنها نگه داري ميکرد.جروشا بچه ها را ردبف کرد،دماغ هايشان را گرفت و لباس هايشان را صاف و صوف کرد و آنها را منظم و به صف به سالن غذا خوري بردتا در نيم ساعت خوشي شان نان و شير و پودينگ بخورند.بعد خودش را ولو کرد روي صندلي کنار پنجره و شقيقه هايش را که تند تند ميزد به شيشه سرد تکيه داد.جروشا از ساعت پنج صبح سرپا بود و دستورهاي همه را انجام داده بود و شماتت هاي رئيس عصباني پرورشگاه،خانم ليپت را شنيده و دستورهايش را تند تند اجرا کرده بود.
