اكتسب الشيخ مقدرة فائقة في القراءة بفضل العلم الذي كان يحصله وبقربه من المشايخ الكبار أمثال "مصطفى إسماعيل" و"علي محمود" وإلمامه بعلوم اللغة العربية، فهو حين كان صغيرًا كان يدرس بالمدرسة الخديوية، فحوله أبوه إلى المدرسة الأولية ليتعلم اللغة العربية ويحفظ القرآن الكريم، وقد ظهر ذلك بالطبع عليه في إحساسه بالنص الشعري الذي يؤديه، وقدرته على تجسيد المعاني واختيار المقامات الموسيقية الملائمة لها، فكان في الحزن الشديد يقرأ من مقام "الصبا"، وفي حالة الوجد يقرأ من مقام "النهاوند" أو "البيان" أو"الحجاز" وفقًا للمعاني وللحالة المزاجية التي يكون عليها في أثناء القراءة.
