Повесть представляет собой свободную конструкцию фантастических новелл. Часть новелл посвящены техническим и научно-техническим достижениям и открытиям, другие рисуют образы людей XXII века. Тексты 1967 года и канонический включает два эпизода начала XXI века (отсутствуют в издании 1962 года). В них перекидывается мостик к «жилинскому циклу» — «Страна багровых туч», «Путь на Амальтею», «Стажеры», «Хищные вещи века» — и упоминаются его герои.
Новеллы связаны друг с другом (весьма условно) местом и временем действия: объединенное человечество XXII века — и героями. Герои повести обозначаются в самом ее начале в двух эпизодах — «Перестарок», где на Землю возвращается космический корабль, запущенный еще в предыдущем столетии, — и «Злоумышленники» — новелле о юных воспитанниках Аньюдинской школы. Повесть ненавязчиво прослеживает судьбу как главных, так и эпизодических героев в течение всего XXII века.Story is a free design fiction novels. Short stories related to each other (very tentatively) place and time of action: a unified humanity XXII century - and heroes. The heroes of the story are indicated at the very beginning in two episodes - "Perestarok" where returned to Earth a spacecraft, launched back in the previous century - and "Intruders" - short story of the young pupils of the school Anyudinskoy. The story subtly traces the fate of both major and episodic characters throughout the XXII century.
