Supta Konasana in Ashtanga Yoga
Supta means "sleeping" and Konan translates as "angle". This asana is the first of the inverted poses and acts as initial preparation for Salamba Sarvangasana and Chakrasana. Bandha control is essential, first to protect the lower back area and second, to boost internal energy that makes it possible to lift the legs off the floor. The neck muscles are strengthened while the back of the head "push" to push back, and simultaneously the muscles that run through the column receive a stimulating massage.
Benefits:
This asana is beneficial for all back problems, including sciatica. The rolling motion of the posture assists in correcting subluxations of the spine. It also aid in the breakdown of body fat and strengthening both the abdominals and back muscles improving our connection to the bandhas—helping to keep the whole body light, healthy, and strong.
