The chorão is a passerine bird of the family Thraupidae, has several songs, such as: Chorona, Cicada do pará, Cigarrinha do norte, Classico, Golinha, Piada da feminino and the Tropeira song.
Also known as Queen Cicada, Boiadeiro (Minas Gerais), Red-billed Cicada, Red-billed / Sealed-Billed (Espírito Santo), Patativa-chorona, Chorona (São Paulo), Chorão (Pernambuco), (Bahia) ) and (Alagoas) or just Patativa (backlands of Paraíba).
Like all other members of the genus Sporophila, it can be called "grass-pope" accompanied by some other adjective. Spore is seed and phila comes from phyllo, which means affinity. It would really be the "one that has an affinity for seeds" or "porridge-grass".
Scientific name:
Its scientific name means: from (Greek) spores = seed; and philos = you like it, friend; and (Greek) leukos = white; and -pteron = wing. ⇒ Bird with a white wing that likes seeds.
Characteristics:
It measures between 12 and 12.5 centimeters in length´ and weighs between 15 and 16 grams.
The male is gray at the top and white at the bottom and the female is olive-brown at the top and beige-brown at the bottom; young people are brown.
The characteristic part of the song is a melancholy upward whistle, repeated without haste.
Reproduction:
Best time to reproduce Chorão. Chorões will be ready to start breeding after one year of age. The mating period in Brazil runs from September to the end of March. The weeping female will lay 2 to 3 eggs per laying and hatching occurs about 13 days after the start of the cuttlefish. There are 2 or 3 broods per season, with 2 or 3 eggs in each.
Habits:
It is a common species that inhabits grassy areas with shrubs and tangles of vegetation, almost always close to water, in swampy areas and banks of rivers and lakes. It lives alone or in scattered pairs, it is a discreet bird and rarely associates with other species.
Geographic distribution:
Present in the mouths of the Amazon River and east of Pará, Maranhão, Piauí and Pernambuco, in a southeast direction to Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and in a west direction to Goiás and Mato Grosso. Also found in Suriname, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Paraguay
