BMI Calculator is a useful measure of overweight and obesity. It is calculated from your height and weight. BMI is an estimate of body fat and a good gauge of your risk for diseases that can occur with more body fat.

Although BMI can be used for most men and women, it does have some limits:
It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build.
It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle.
Use the BMI Calculator or BMI Tables to estimate your body fat.
For people who are considered obese (BMI greater than or equal to 30) or those who are overweight (BMI of 25 to 29.9) and have two or more risk factors, it is recommended that you lose weight. Even a small weight loss (between 5 and 10 percent of your current weight) will help lower your risk of developing diseases associated with obesity. People who are overweight, do not have a high waist measurement, and have fewer than two risk factors may need to prevent further weight gain rather than lose weight.
Talk to your doctor to see whether you are at an increased risk and whether you should lose weight. Your doctor will evaluate your BMI, waist measurement, and other risk factors for heart disease.
The good news is even a small weight loss (between 5 and 10 percent of your current weight) will help lower your risk of developing those diseases.

Depending on your BMI number, you will be classified as:

Underweight (BMI less than 18.5)
Healthy weight (BMIs 18.5 to 24.9)
Overweight (BMIs 25 to 29.9)
Obese (BMI 30 and over)
If your BMI is less than 18.5, you are underweight. Health risks associated with being underweight include osteoporosis, infertility, and impaired immune functioning. Underweight may also indicate an eating disorder or other underlying illness.

If your BMI is 18.5 – 24.9, it is a healthy range. This may lower your risk for developing weight-related health problems.

If your BMI is 25 or higher, you are at greater risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and some types of cancer. The higher your BMI number (over 25) is, the greater your risk of developing these conditions.

How is the BMI calculated?

The BMI is calculated using your height and weight. The BMI formula is list below. BMI can be calculated using either metric or imperial measures (the results will be the same).

Metric Units
kilograms (kg) and meters (m)
Weight in kg
(Height in meters)2
Imperial (British) Units
pounds (lbs) and inches (in)
Weight in pounds x 703
(Height in inches)2
Limitations

BMI is a handy tool, but it is not right for everyone. It may not accurately assess health risks in:

Muscular athletes
People under age 18 who have not reached full growth
Pregnant or lactating women
Adults over age 65

What should I do if my BMI is not within the healthy weight range?

If your number falls in the “overweight” or “obese” BMI range, try to lose weight by making lifestyle changes. Start by eating smaller food portions and increasing your activity level. For information on healthy eating, talk to a registered dietitian. Find a registered dietitian in your area.

People with very low or very high BMIs tend to have the greater health risks. For example, if your BMI falls into the normal weight category, you will still have a higher risk of health problems if you smoke cigarettes, do not participate in regular physical activity and unhealthy foods with excessive fat and sugar.

Therefore it is quite clear that BMI is a very useful tool at your disposal to check and know whether your are healthy or not and take necessary steps to stay fit and fine.
