Budgies or budgerigars have been a popular pet bird option for a long time. These small birds or parrots can be found in just about any pet shop or bird store, but they're generally only found in the wild in their native Australia and come in one hundred variations of these beautiful birds.
An early recorded description of the budgie was made in 1805 by an English zoologist and botanist called George Shaw. The first budgie was brought to Europe by an English ornithologist named John Gould in 1840, and the first captive breeding of the budgie began just a decade later during the early 1850s.
The budgerigar’s scientific name is Melopsittacus undulatus. The first part, Melopsittacus, is Greek and means “melodious parrot,”. The second part, undulatus, is Latin and means “wave-patterned” or “undulated.”
