The audio tours provide on-location and armchair travelers alike the opportunity to learn more about Monterey’s diverse natural and cultural history at these various State Parks. In addition to audio recordings, the app features basic park information, image galleries, historic photos, and audio transcriptions. GPS maps allow visitors to explore the area and locate nearby sites.

The Monterey District encompasses miles of coastal beaches ranging from Zmudowski State Beach at the northern edge of the district, to Fort Ord Dunes State Park with 4 miles of oceanfront shoreline, to Monterey State Beach, just north of historic Monterey State Historic Park – home of California’s first capital city: Monterey. Asilomar State Beach embraces both the architecture of Julia Morgan, California’s first licensed woman architect, and peaceful walks along Asilomar’s wide sandy beach and Marine Protected tidepools. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve offers views of cavorting sea otters, migrating gray whales and a variety of birds in an unrivaled natural setting. Traveling south to Big Sur reveals the historic Light Station at Point Sur State Historic Park, with the final audio tour culminating at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park which offers hiking trails through redwood trees, and a waterfall at the Pfeiffer Falls trail.

The Monterey District is part of the 280-park system of California State Parks. Encompassing over 1.59 million acres – the largest and most diverse natural and cultural heritage holdings of any state agency in the nation. California State Parks protects and preserves an unparalleled collection of culturally and environmentally sensitive structures and habitats, threatened plant and animal species, ancient Native American sites, historic structures, and artifact collections.
