What you'll need:

• high-density upholstery foam
• lightweight batting

Step 1
Remove the seat of the bench by unscrewing any hardware. Use a staple remover or pliers to detach upholstery from the underside. Pull off any batting or foam, then set the frame aside.

Step 2
Sand the frame using medium-grade sandpaper (between 60- and 100-grit) until the original wood is uncovered. Wipe clean using a damp cloth, then paint the frame with a coat of primer and two coats of the color of your choice, allowing drying time between each coat.

Step 3
Cut a "cushion" from upholstery foam (at least two inches thick) and batting. Trace the border of the seat onto the foam with a permanent marker, then cut out the section using a serrated knife.

Step 4
Lay cotton batting on a flat surface. Place the upholstery foam on top and then put the seat facedown on the foam. Working around the perimeter of the frame, use a staple gun to attach batting to frame, stretching it tightly to hold the foam and frame firmly in place.

Step 5
Attach the fabric as done above, making sure to line up any patterns. Once it's stapled all the way around, cut off the excess fabric and batting. Replace the seat on bench and reattach with screws.

The Finished Looks
Seeing double never looked better. We created two distinct styles with the basic bench thanks to a mix of fabrics and colors. For those more drawn to bright color and floral patterns, opt for a fabric with a splash of red flowers juxtaposed against an electric blue wall.

If your home style errs on the more bohemian side, choose a cool, neutral paint color and subtly accent with black and white stripes.
