Update: In my tests I couldn't download the entire english database. If you can't enter search entries or the app crashes while typing or searching, you have the same problem. Please wait until I resolved the problem or select a different language.
With the DBpedia crawler, data can be retrieved from Wikipedia articles. DBpedia (www.dbpedia.org) stores the data of the info boxes, this app presents them in a tabular layout. Titles can be searched with or without specifying properties, search criteria such as birth date and birth place or class affiliations like "president" or "chancellor" are also supported. Apparently the server can not process more than 3 criteria at once.
Local Space:
Prior to the useage, at least two databases must be downloaded (internal app download). One contains the properties in all languages. The others contain the names of Wikipedia articles in the chosen language. The english database needs about 3.3 GB on the SD card, all other language databases need between 100 and 200MB respectively. The property database is about 2MB in size.
Usage:
Three input fields can be used to enter search terms, exactly one term per field. If the search contains more terms, a list can be created via the "Add" function. However, terms that depend on each other must not be separated by the Add function. Example: You are looking for people who were born before 1950 in Germany
Field 1: birth date
Field 2: <1950
Press Add
Field 1: birth place
Field 2: Germany
Press Search
Dates are accepted in various formats (eg, 24/07/2013, 24/07/2013, 2013-07-24), but also terms such as "June 2013" are possible, depending on the default language of the device.
A few more examples of input (please note the order):
Born between 1950 and 1960 in Hamburg:
Field 1: birth place
Field 2: Hamburg
Press Add
Field 1: birth date
Field 2: >1950
Field 3: <1960
Press Search
All information about Berlin
Field 1: Berlin
Search
Population of Hamburg:
Field 1: Hamburg
Field 2: population total
Search
Please note that both this app and DBpedia are still in beta. For more information about DBpedia visit the website www.dbpedia.org. This app was written by an independent developer and is not related to the DBpedia developers.
Information for users who are familiar with DBpedia:
Ontologies:
Currently only the DBpedia ontology is used. If I find label lists of other ontologies (etc. Umbel, YAGO) I'll add them.
Databases:
The available databases contain the labels of version 3.8. All language databases are build from the canonicalized datasets (labels_en.nt.bz2 and labels_en_uris_xx.nt.bz2). An additional localized dataset is only available from the german DBpedia.
Endpoint:
The default endpoint is dbpedia.org/sparql, but can be changed in the settings to a localized endpoint (e.g. de.dbpedia.org/sparql). For the german language there is an additional database for the localized endpoint, all other languages use the same database for both localized and standard endpoint.
