One of the many things I enjoy about living out in the country is having the yard space for a clothesline. When moving to another city, as we have done many times, I have placed a clothesline space high on the priorities for our new home. Even though a clothesline is one of those not-so-modern, not-so-convenient pieces of housework equipment that many women eschew, I myself truly enjoy having one in my back yard. Few things in my opinion can match the crispy texture the clothes retain when hung in the sun and wind. Then there is the smell of outside dried clothes, which is one of a kind, memory-inducing and in my book, irreplaceable.
Not too long ago as I was hanging clothes on the line, I thought about the clothespins and the tough job they have gripping the clothes on the line. Besides the fact that some of the items are pretty heavy, when you add a good breeze to the mix the clothespin has to work hard to maintain its grip! Nevertheless, that clothespin will hold onto its charge even when the piece is flapping in the breeze or twisting with a strong wind. It reminds me of the postman's creed "through rain or storm or dark of night" (or something like that).
Then considering the grip of the pin, it brought to mind the loving, caring grip that God has on my life. His grip, like the clothespin is taut, strong and steadfast, especially in the storms of life. Like the clothespin grips our clothes whipping about on the line, the Lord God holds on to our lives. He never lets go of us, even in the storms or winds or downpours of our lives. He keeps us in His tight grip so that we can weather whatever comes our way. And like the clothes on the line, when the sun comes out again, He dries us out, gives us a sweet fragrance and readies us for another day.
God, however, unlike the inanimate object that a clothespin is, clings to us in and with unending love, unfailing patience, ever present kindness and grace that is amazing. He not only keeps us in His grip but He loves us no matter how much we twist and turn and flap. As long as we welcome His grip on our lives, praise Him for holding on to us and love Him for clinging to us, He will hold onto us, no matter the storm. He is so good.
