Looking for an easy and fun DIY fashion craft? Then look no further than your closet and that pair of boring blue jeans. Blue jeans are a timeless fashion item, designed to withstand the world of come and go fashions, but they can be a bit ho-hum. Yes, they will go with just about anything but plain blue jeans are nothing special on their own. Your jeans look pretty much the same as everyone else's. So what can you do to jazz up your denim, give it its very own bit of personality? Putting your own spin on jeans is simple. Using a variety of techniques like fraying, ripping, sand, bleaching, patching and coloring, you can personalize your old pair of boring denims into something pretty cool.
How to Get the Distressed Look: Distressed or ripped jeans is certainly one of the coolest looks going around, and getting it is also one of the easiest. Holed jeans scream punk, rebel and artist. So how do you get this look? Take a pair of scissors and cut in the desired area. Go easy though, and start out slow. The best places to rip your jeans include the thighs and the knees. Oh - and stay away from problem areas like the butt and the crotch - no one wants to see your underwear.
Don't go for the clean, slashed look - it will look too artificial, so remember to fray the openings in the rips by using a wire brush, a comb or even a sewing needle to pick out the threads. To make a thread longer, just pull on it.
You can use the same technique to fray the hems of your jeans. For a natural look, fray the heel only. Since these usually fray on their own, this will ensure a natural, nonchalant look. Pull on the threads to exaggerate any fraying that may be there already. You can also add some natural looking wear and tear by taking coarse sand paper and rubbing it across the knees and back of the thighs. And remember, if you're wearing your jeans when to do this, go easy so you don't scrape yourself.
But what if you're more artistic and less rebellious when it comes to your jeans? Then try stenciling designs onto your jeans. For a simple way to add a stencil, follow these instructions:
- Pick a cool shape, like the moon. Draw the moon on a piece of stiff paper or cardstock and cut it out.
- Lay it the stencil on the denim to find the right placement
- Bleach your jeans - in order to hold the new color of the stencil, you will want to bleach your jeans first. Soak up some fabric bleach with a sponge and then dab it on the stencil
- Place the stencil on the jeans and watch the blue denim fade
- Remove the stencil, clean, rinse and soak the sponge with clean water and rub out the bleach on the jeans
- Replace the stencil over the bleached area and using the sponge, transfer your favorite color of fabric dye onto the bleached spot
What if you're not into the stenciling - then go for both texture and color by adding patches or appliqués onto your jeans. You can find fabric appliqués in any craft store or make your own from scrap fabric and sew them onto your jeans or use iron transfers to affix them to your jeans.
Before you know it you'll be rocking out your jeans, going from blah and boring to totally fab - and these are great projects to do with friends. Enjoy this simple craft to get your wardrobe totally rocking and personalize your jeans with loads of style.
