On November 5, 2015, the historic city of Mariana, Minas Gerais, was the scene of the greatest environmental tragedy that has been registered in Brazil.
A barrier of mud debris broke, causing the leakage of 62 million cubic meters of ore tailings. The disaster caused the deaths of 19 people, including employees of the company responsible for the dam and residents of Mariana.
