This is a simple free crochet pattern for an easy dishcloth made using mostly single crochet stitches. Although intended as a dishcloth pattern, it also works for washcloths. The yarn used for this project, Simply Cotton Yarn by KnitPicks, is a really soft cotton yarn, so it feels great against the skin but it will also work well for cleaning dishes. Feel free to adapt the pattern to use it for washcloths as well as dishcloths.
You can make your cloths smaller or larger than what is shown here either by changing to a smaller / larger hook or by adding / removing rows. The pattern is easy enough that you should be able to make either of those changes without any difficulty.
Materials Needed for this Crochet Project:
Yarn: You'll need a high-quality sport weight cotton yarn. This sample was crocheted using Simply Cotton by Knit Picks. Simply Cotton is an incredibly soft organic cotton yarn. The color that was used in these samples is an off-white color called "Marshmallow". This yarn is available in a nice range of colors, so if you'd like to make your cloth(s) in a different color, you'll have plenty of options.
And, of course, you don't need to use this yarn if there is another type of sport weight cotton yarn that you prefer.
Amount of Yarn Needed: People who choose to work with Simply Cotton by Knit Picks should find that it is possible to make three crochet dishcloths with one 50 gram ball of the yarn. There are 164 yards per ball, so you'll need an estimated 16.67 grams / 54.67 yards to make each cloth.
Crochet Project Gauge:
5 sts = approximately 1 inch; row gauge is not critical unless you want to make sure that your dishcloths are a certain size.
Finished Size of Crochet Dishcloths:
Each dishcloth measure about 7 inches square. This is a good size for using as either a dishcloth or a washcloth. As aforementioned, you can change the size by changing your gauge (using a different yarn / hook) or by adding or decreasing rows. For example, if you want a rectangular crochet dishcloth that is 7" wide but 14" long then you would double the number of rows in this pattern.
