Emotional intelligence consists in the ability to manage feelings and emotions, to discriminate between them and to use this knowledge to direct one's own thoughts and actions.
What is emotional intelligence and why is control of emotions the key to personal and professional success? .
Emotional intelligence consists of a series of activities that serve to appreciate and express in a fair way the emotions of one's own and those of others, and to use sensitivity in order to motivate oneself, plan and realize one's own life.
The relevance of emotions in the workplace and research on the subject continued to gain momentum, but it was not until the publication in 1995 of Daniel Goleman's famous book, Emotional Intelligence, when it became popular.
The biological design that governs our emotional spectrum does not have five or fifty generations evolving; It is a system that has been present in us for more than fifty thousand generations and has contributed, with demonstrated success, to our survival as a species. Therefore, it is not surprising that on many occasions, faced with the complex challenges presented by the contemporary world, we respond instinctively with emotional resources adapted to the needs of the Pleistocene.
On this cerebral base in which the emotions are settled, the neocortex was created about 100 million years ago: the brain region that differentiates us from all other species and in which everything characteristically human rests. Thinking, thinking about feelings, understanding symbols, art, culture and civilization find their origin in this spongy redoubt of neural tissues. By offering us the possibility of long-term planning and developing other related mental strategies, the complex structures of the neocortex allowed us to survive as a species.
Proud of our ability to control our emotions, we have fallen into the trap of believing that our rationality overcomes our feelings and that we can attribute to it the cause of all our actions.
Neurological studies have found that the first brain region through which sensory signals from the eyes or ears pass is the thalamus, which distributes the messages to the other regions of brain processing. From there, the signals are directed to the neocortex, where the information is weighted through different levels of brain circuits, to have a complete notion of what happens and finally to issue a response adapted to the situation. The neocortex registers and analyzes the situation and goes to the prefrontal lobes to understand and organize the stimuli, in order to provide an analytical and proportionate response, then sending the signals to the limbic system so that it produces and irradiates the hormonal responses to the rest of the body.
