EnergyPal is a mobile app that displays real-time energy usage data to homeowners. It displays the energy usage of various household appliances via wattmeters plugged into the outlets. Our goal is to make homeowners more conscious of their energy usage, thus reducing their overall carbon footprint.
Using the XBee wireless system, we send data from measured devices to a central Gemalto board, which uploads usage data to our servers. This can track the wattage of various large household appliances (refrigerators, washers/dryers, hot water heaters, etc) to allow homeowners to see the difference in their energy usage in real time on their mobile devices.
93% of college students interviewed said they would reduce their energy usage if they had real time feedback on how their usage affects their bills. This app does just that. EnergyPal will help North Texas save a significant amount of energy, thus reducing the overall carbon footprint of the area and lessening the energy crisis.
In the future, we plan to create an MVP that hooks into the circuitry directly (circuit breaker or specialized outlets) to allow for less intrusive measurement. We will also work with power companies to provide these at lower costs and make installation easier, allowing both power companies and homeowners to save on energy usage.
This app was created by Ian Macalinao, a freshman at the University of Texas at Dallas, Adil Virani and Brandon Truong, high school students at the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, and Dylan Macalinao, a 10th grade high school student at Legacy Christian Academy.
