Time study is a technique generally used by industrial engineers, which seeks to determine the standard time to perform a certain task, taking into account the time of rest and natural human inefficiency.
Currently these measurements, and subsequent analysis, is performed manually or with little digital intervention. That is, using instruments such as the stopwatch, paper, pencil and calculator. And although there are people and companies that use Excel for data analysis, yet, for compilation depend on the instruments mentioned above; well as the experience and skill of an analyst.
This manual method has been used for years and there are many professionals who have the experience necessary to perform time studies with high levels of accuracy. In fact, several universities spend up to two semesters for students to master this technique. But the problem is that we are talking about a manual method, a method that is very sensitive to failure by the reliance on the accuracy of human beings to master and requires much practice. If we realized that we are in the digital age and there are many ways in which this method can be digitized, then its crystal clear that the manual method its unnecessary.
I am an industrial engineer and it was a real pain for my fellows mastering this technique. I say to my colleagues because a friend of mine and I, supporting in our knowledge of Visual Basic, developed a small and handy software that helped us to take, record and analyze the operating times and then calculate the standard time for the same. All of this without putting our hands to the stopwatch, pencil and/or paper. What my colleagues did in a 4-hour class, my friend and I, did it in 1 hour (75% faster).
After graduation, I was hired to perform a time study in a textile manufacturing company. And although who hired me was extremely pleased with the results of the time study, I did not feel satisfied because I thought the work would take less time. And I did not realize how uncomfortable it was to walk with a laptop into a production hall taking time with the help of the software my friend and I developed.
I needed something more practical and mobile, something like a phone or a tablet. And it is precisely there that the idea and motivation of developing EON. A free application for the benefit of the community of students and professionals in industrial engineering who wish to take time is faster, safer and easier.
