Geo-fencing (geofencing) is a tremendous feature in a software program that uses
the global positioning system (GPS) or radio frequency identification (RFID) to
define geographical boundaries. A geofence is a virtual barrier. Geofencing is an
innovative technology, a marketplace for proactive context-aware services, which
enables users to easily find and subscribe to interesting services and allows
providers to specify, export and maintain their services for versatile applications
like electronic toll collect, context-aware advertising, or tourist information
systems, even without implementing additional infrastructures.

The main objective of this research was to understand how the use of geospatial
data can improve advertising performance for customers. The tracking & tracing
systems that are based on the global navigation satellite services and include a
geofencing feature, could also contribute in the exact location of an institution or
business and can efficiently increase the sales and economic perspective. Instead
of big Bill boards one can now advertise through smart phones with proven
efficiency and accuracy. Therefore, we developed a concept for a marketplace
providing geofence services that can be implemented by everyone, thus helping to
increase the overall usage and integration of proactive location- based services in
our daily lives.
