New multilingual image for Marpol
This free of charge app is developed as a tool for improving communications on board fishing vessels with multilingual crews. It is accessible in 5 languages and has been developed by the workers’ and employers’ organisations ETF and Europêche with the financial support of the European Commission.
This application was developed by ETF and Europêche, EU-level social partners. The project was financially supported by the European Commission. Fisheries is a much internationalized sector and EU fishing vessels often operate with multilingual crews. The lack of a common language among crew members can be an obstacle to safe and secure navigation and on-board operations. Training should be the first and foremost instrument to improve safety and security. Proper training should be compulsory for all those working on board fishing vessels. At the same time, tools like this application can contribute to tackling the communications problems that occur when people speak different languages whilst working on the same vessels.
This app contains an extensive glossary on most recurrent health and safety issues and provides an overview of emergency situations, abbreviations, related words. Text is accompanied by pictures. The application also offers the possibility of an off-line search which allows the glossary to be used in the absence of an internet connection.
