Flower arrangement as art in Europe was first documented in the Netherlands which was made in the form of paintings. In the 18th century, flower arrangements were used to decorate the homes of wealthy officials and families. The earliest formal flower arrangements in Europe were Dutch, as shown in many paintings from the 17th century. Flower arrangement placed in Curved Window, Ambrosius Bosschaert, circa 1618-1620.

The language of interest and the symbolism of the meaning of the flower arrangement may differ in many cultures. In the Chinese country each season is symbolized by a certain interest. Plum white flowers represent winter, peach and sakura symbolize spring, lotus is a sign of summer, while chrysanthemum symbolizes autumn.
