Fox Mobile App 2.0 allows users to schedule advising sessions, reserve breakout rooms
You asked for it. Now, you have it.
With the update to the Fox School Mobile App, the five-star app is adding a slew of new features including one for scheduling advising appointments and another that to allow students to reserve breakout rooms in Alter Hall and check those reservations.
These are two of the features that students most requested, said Senior Web Developer Josh Sankey, who worked on Fox School Mobile App 2.0 with Director of Innovation in Learning Technologies David Schuff and the rest of Fox’s web and media development team.
Fox School Mobile 2.0 will now allow users to search faculty and staff individually, and the updated app uses voice software that will allow the app to find people using phonetics and common misspellings. So if you wanted to find Sankey but couldn’t remember how exactly his last name was spelled, the app should be able to find it under “Sanky.”
Web developers also added all available faculty and staff photos to their profiles so that users have an idea of what professors look like before entering meetings or classes for the first time.
In addition, students were anxious for a way to save and possibly share events listed on the app, so the development team added an “Add Event to Gmail Calendar” button to each event listing. After user sign into their Gmail account once, they won’t have to do it again.
Among the few performance enhancements that were necessary, the 2.0 version of the app should no longer be sluggish on older Android phones, and tablet supports were added so that Fox School Mobile should look just as good on iPads as it does on iPhones.
The first version of the Fox School Mobile App, a free app for Android phones, iPhones and iPads that provides a streaming news feed, school events calendar, and faculty and staff directory, launched on Feb. 23, 2012. Sankey said the web-development team plans to launch a tablet-only version of the app in the near future. – Rosella Eleanor LaFevre
