This book chronicles the life of Frederick Douglas and his struggle of being a slave who couldn't read or write and what he had to endure to learn how to read and write during the times of slavery in the United States. Frederick Douglas gives an excellent narrative of his life as a slave and the different conditions he endured as a slave and what it took for him to become a free man. It is very interesting to hear an eloquent ex slave express himself in a manner that is way beyond his education and formal upbringing. Frederick Douglas was simply brilliant and intelligent far beyond his peers which made his seem like an oddity when he did simple things such as speak and debate over issues that affect the human condition of every living soul.
His observation on Christianity and slavery and how the two were intermingled and slavery was accepted as the way of God for the black man and woman. It is amazing in a country that was founded on the principles of freedom, justice and liberty for all no liberty or justice was spared to the black Americans who were sold into slavery. Frederick Douglas expounded upon these comparisons and hypocrisy that was so prevalent during the hundreds of years of slavery that the church actually endorsed and enforced against the children of God.
This is a must read if you are not familiar with the true perspective of slavery based on the experiences of an ex slave and it will give you chill bumps when you start to realize the horror and atrocities that were not written in the book.
