The Addis Ababa Greek Community (now, the Hellenic Greek Community Association in Ethiopia), was established about 103 years ago in Addis Ababa. It was established to assist its members in supporting each other and their families in solving any economic and social problems they faced and to promote their own culture.
Primarily, the then members were interested in giving a Greek education to their kids in Ethiopia and to have a center which could organize and strengthen their social, economic and educational relations between the countries of Ethiopia and Greece. Charity towards needy Greeks (now with about 90 families getting monthly stipends, medical and medicinal services), cultural, religious and other services were and continue to be an important part of the Community’s activities. Additionally, it manages a dormitory for kids of needy Greeks whose parents/relations reside outside Addis Ababa.
The Association owns and manages the building of the Greek Archbishop around Sidist Kilo, the St. Frumentius Orthodox Church around Piazza and the Greek Cemetery opposite the Petro-Paulos Church in Gullelle.
The first Greek Community School was established in 1985 in a building in the Piazza area. It was moved to its present premises, close to Olympia, in 1960 and continues to this day following the curriculum of the Greek Ministry of Education, while as of 1985, the English Section was started which follows the Cambridge University Curricullum.
